The Northam Bridge shut tight in both directions early this morning, sending drivers scrambling for back-up routes. But good news – the road is back open.
Man’s Welfare Sparks Emergency Response
Police were called at 5.56am after a concern for a man’s welfare on the bridge. The entire road was closed as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
“The road reopened around 8 a.m., and the man was taken to the hospital,” a police spokesman confirmed.
Bus Chaos – Services Diverted and Delayed
- City Red tweeted: “Due to an incident on Northam Bridge outbound, we are diverting via Itchen Bridge. We can’t serve all stops on Bitterne Road West between Northam and Bitterne.”
- Bluestar added: “Diversions are in place on routes 16 and 18 due to police activity. Northam Bridge outbound is closed. We cannot serve any bus stops between Northam Bridge and Bitterne shops. Apologies for the inconvenience.”
Motorists Urged to Avoid Area

Traffic has since got back to normal with the bridge now reopened, but the disruption this morning caused major headaches for commuters.
