Snow Alert: Kent Braced for Up to 10cm, Travel Chaos Looms

Yellow Warning Updated: Snow and Ice Threats Eased Until Evening

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Kent, but it has been updated this morning to say snow and ice are no longer expected until 6 p.m. on Sunday. However, that’s no excuse to let your guard down just yet.

Kent Could See Heavy Snowfall Across Key Areas

Forecasters warn up to 5cm of snow could blanket large parts of Kent, with some spots seeing double that amount. The North Downs, stretching from Farnham in Surrey through Sevenoaks, Gillingham, and down to Dover, is in the firing line.

High Weald faces the heaviest snowfall, with up to 10cm predicted.

Travel Mayhem on the Horizon

Motorists and commuters should brace themselves. The Met Office warns of possible road delays caused by stranded vehicles and icy conditions. Air travellers might face delays or cancellations too.

“There is a small chance of road travel delays due to stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as air travel delays or cancellations,” the Met Office said.

Communities Could Face Isolation and Service Disruptions

Rural areas risk being cut off. Untreated pavements and cycle paths may turn treacherous or impassable, boosting the chance of slips, falls, and injuries.

Power outages and mobile phone disruptions could follow as icy conditions tighten their grip.

Freezing Fog and Sleet Could Worsen Conditions

Earlier this week, the UK saw a level three warning as temperatures plunged to -10 degrees Celsius in places. The Met Office’s chief meteorologist Steve confirmed: “Ice is also likely to form on untreated surfaces, particularly near coasts where rain or sleet is more likely.”

He added, “There is still a risk of freezing fog in places, particularly southern England, especially for Sunday and Monday mornings.”

Monday morning’s rush hour may be disrupted by a band of sleet or snow moving into the far south-east.

Stay safe and stay tuned for updates as Kent prepares for a chilly spell that could bring serious disruption.
