A massive tech meltdown linked to Amazon Web Services (AWS) has crippled major UK apps this morning. Banking giants Halifax and Lloyds, social favourite Snapchat, HMRC, and Ring doorbells all faced outages, leaving thousands locked out and fuming.
Halifax and Lloyds Banking Apps Obliterated
Halifax users were the first to sound the alarm just before 9am, with nearly 4,000 reports of app crashes and blocked account access flooding in. The trouble is ongoing, with no fix yet in sight.
Lloyds customers are equally hacked off. Half the complaints mention online banking failing, plus mobile logins and app sluggishness. One user fumed: “Lloyds banking app is failing to log me in.” Another moaned: “Card payments were being declined, but at least payments are going through now.”
Lloyds fired back on X (formerly Twitter):
“Hi! I’m Bev. I understand how frustrating it is when you are unable to access your accounts. Please try these steps: Clear the app’s cache and browsing history. Fully close the app, then reopen. Try logging in using both mobile data and Wi-Fi to see which works better.”
Snapchat, HMRC and Ring Doorbells Also Taken Out
Snapchat users started complaining from 7.45am, unable to open the app or website. A spokesperson said:
“We’re aware that some Snapchatters are having issues using the app right now – hang tight, we’re looking into it!”
HMRC customers faced lockouts from just before 8am, with more than 200 issues reported.
Ring doorbell owners are furious after 13 hours of downtime, unable to view footage or log into apps and website. One user asked: “Is anybody else’s ring camera account down right now?”
