Communists Clash with Lloyds Over Cuba Bank Account Shutdown
Brighton Protest Hits Lloyds Bank
Yesterday afternoon, the Brighton branch of the Revolutionary Communist Group staged a picket outside Lloyds Bank on North Road. They’re furious after Lloyds shut down accounts linked to “1c4cuba”, a campaign backed by Cuba solidarity organisations across Britain and Europe.
Bank Accounts Closed Amid US Cuba Blockade Fight
The closed accounts were key to calling out British and European banks for enabling the US blockade on Cuba. The campaign works to block UK banks from enforcing US sanctions on Cuba—despite being extra-territorial and controversial.
What the Protesters Want
The activists demand Lloyds reinstate all bank accounts providing humanitarian aid to Cuba. They also want an end to transaction blocks tied to Cuba solidarity efforts. The group vows to keep up pressure on banks that “enable the US stranglehold on Cuba.”
“Our members will continue to call out any British banks that undertake illegal actions that enable the US stranglehold on Cuba to continue. Members from across the country have picketed branches and HQs of Lloyds, Metro Bank and RBS.”
