NYC Parking Garage Collapses: One Dead, Four Injured
A parking garage in Lower Manhattan collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, killing one person and injuring four others. Officials warned the casualty numbers could rise and ordered nearby buildings to evacuate immediately.
Scenes of Chaos at 57 Ann Street
The disaster struck at 4:15pm at 57 Ann Street, between Nassau and William Streets. Video footage captured a panicked woman shouting, “Get out!” as the multi-level car park’s floor pancaked onto the one below. A lift shaft also caved in, trapping several people inside.
Rescue crews are battling dangerous conditions, unable to enter due to the risk of further collapse. Four injured victims have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening wounds. The identity and cause of death for the fatality remain undisclosed.
Evacuations and Commute Chaos
Nearby residents and businesses have been told to leave the area until it is declared safe. Pace University has shut its nearby campus and cancelled all classes following the incident.
A city fire officer said: “Injuries and deaths are expected to change quickly.” Emergency response teams continue combing through the rubble with help from drones and robots as the investigation unfolds.
Mayor Eric Adams has been notified. Authorities have warned commuters to expect delays around the area near New york/" title="York" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">York City Hall.
