Blackwall Tunnel Shuts Southbound for Two Summer Weekends
Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed the Blackwall Tunnel will close southbound for two weekends this summer. The shutdown on July 20-22 and August 17-19 is to reconfigure the road ahead of the new Silvertown Tunnel opening next year.
During these closures, TfL will also resurface roads and upgrade safety barriers to improve driver safety.
Only Southbound Traffic Affected, Northbound Traffic Diverted
The closures will start at 12:01am on Saturdays and last until 5am Mondays. Northbound traffic won’t be affected and will be rerouted through the southbound tunnel when necessary to keep journeys moving.
Bus Route 108 will be temporarily split, terminating at Canning Town station and North Greenwich while the works are underway.
Silvertown Tunnel Set to Slash East London Travel Times
The Silvertown Tunnel, first proposed over ten years ago, promises to ease traffic congestion and cut travel times by up to 20 minutes for east London commuters. Opening next year, it will boost bus services across the river and introduce a new cycle shuttle for cyclists.
TfL Preps for Tunnel’s Future with Vital Maintenance Work
We are now in the final phase of works to complete the Silvertown Tunnel and these closures will help us to start getting the tunnel ready to open,” said Nick Fairholme from TfL. “We appreciate that these planned weekend works will impact some drivers and are doing everything we can to limit potential disruption – including ensuring a northbound route through the Blackwall Tunnel is maintained throughout.”
TfL will take this opportunity to carry out essential maintenance inside and around the Blackwall Tunnel to ensure it remains safe and reliable for years to come.
