Margate Bonfire Blaze Sparks Garden Fire Panic – Three Fire Engines Rush In
A bonfire in Margate spiralled out of control on Saturday night (10 May), sparking flames that spread to nearby fencing. Kent Fire and Rescue Service scrambled three fire crews to tackle the blaze.
Rapid Response Quells Fire in Mere Gate Garden
The fire broke out just before 9pm in a garden on Mere Gate, triggering urgent calls to the emergency services. Firefighters arrived quickly and doused the fire using high-pressure hose reel jets. The inferno was brought under control by 10:12pm, according to officials.
“The fire is believed to have started from a bonfire and spread to fencing in the garden,” a Kent Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed.
No Injuries but Serious Fire Safety Warning Issued
Thankfully, no injuries were reported. But this close call has sparked a fresh warning about bonfire safety from Kent fire crews.
The service urged everyone to follow these crucial outdoor burning tips:
- Keep bonfires away from fences, trees, bushes, and buildings.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Always have water or a hosepipe on hand.
“A fire can spread faster than you think,” they warned. “Be responsible and always supervise any outdoor burning.”
Fire Warning Comes as Warm Weather Lures More Outdoor Activities
With warmer weather returning, fire services nationwide are raising alarms about risks linked to uncontrolled bonfires, barbecues, and garden waste burning. Kent’s quick action prevented a dangerous situation from escalating, they said.
Local Residents Thank Firefighters, Share Concerns
Thanet locals flooded social media with gratitude for the crews that tackled the blaze. One neighbour posted on Facebook: “The smell of smoke was strong – scary how fast these things can spread. Thank you to the fire crews who dealt with it.”
