Boomtown Car Park Blaze Destroys 60+ Cars at Hampshire Music Festival
A massive fire tore through the west car park at Boomtown Fair, near Winchester, Hampshire, gutting at least 60 cars. Black smoke billowed over the Matterley Bowl festival site, sending shockwaves through campers and staff alike.
Explosions and Chaos as Fire Rages
The blaze sparked a few small explosions, creating panic among festival-goers and staff. Security and parking workers were seen taking selfies amidst the chaos while waiting for fire crews to arrive. Six fire engines, along with police and ambulance services, cordoned off the area as firefighters battled to control the inferno.
The fire also spread to portable lighting, worsening the damage. Hampshire Police deployed a helicopter to survey the scene and check if any other vehicles were at risk. Nearby campers were evacuated as a precaution while emergency teams worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames.
Car Owners Left in the Dark
Many car owners remain unaware their vehicles have been destroyed. Initial reports from event security mentioned six cars were affected, but the ambulance service later confirmed the number of ruined vehicles is closer to 80. Hampshire Police continue their investigation alongside the fire service to determine the cause of the blaze.
Festival’s Troubled Past
This is not the first time Boomtown Fair has faced tragedy. In 2015, Ellie Rowe, 18, died after taking the drug ketamine at the festival. The previous year, Lisa Williamson was found dead in a toilet, having taken her own life.
Hampshire Police statement:
“We were called around 4.15pm on Friday, August 12, following reports of a multiple car fire at the west car park at Boomtown Fair. Officers on scene and Hampshire Fire and Rescue worked to contain the fire and evacuated a neighbouring campsite as a precaution. The fire was under control just before 6pm. No injuries have been reported. We are collaborating with HFRS to investigate the cause and are working with event organisers to ensure the site remains safe and those affected receive support.”
