Bradford Makes History with First Female Gritter Driver
Bradford has broken the ice by welcoming Nikki Francis as its first-ever female gritter driver. The 55-year-old Queensbury resident, from a part of town famed for brutal winters, has joined the council’s winter maintenance crew, driving gritters to keep roads safe.
Office Worker Turns Heavy-Duty Driver
Nikki’s no stranger to Bradford Council. Since 2003, she’s worked as a Stock Control Officer for the Highways and Street Lighting team. But her real passion was always behind the wheel.
After smashing her Urban Driving Apprenticeship and scoring a Category C HGV licence, she completed gruelling winter maintenance training. Now, Nikki’s fully qualified to pilot the council’s gritters.
“Despite spending my working life in an office, I’ve always wanted to be a lorry driver. I had an uncle who drove an HGV, and I suppose that’s when the bug first hit. Now, I can finally cross it off my bucket list,” Nikki revealed.
Gritting Runs and Taking on the Challenge
Nikki’s made four gritting runs so far and is loving every minute behind the wheel. She urges others to take the plunge:
“Just go for it. Yes, the nerves are there, just like when you drive a car for the first time. But you have to remember the huge responsibility when driving an 11.5-tonne vehicle — 18 tonnes when fully loaded with grit!”
Keeping Bradford’s Roads Safe Come Rain or Snow
Nikki is now one of 48 drivers maintaining Bradford’s roads through harsh weather. Their Priority One Routes cover over 62% of the district’s 710-mile road network.
- Each gritting run takes 2-3 hours.
- Drivers perform safety checks and clean vehicles after every shift.
- Leftover grit is emptied before heading home.
Bradford’s Gritters with a Twist of Fun
The council operates 24 gritters, including five named by local schoolchildren:
- Glittery Ice Machine – Dixons Music Primary School
- Grittle Mix – Burley Woodhead Primary School
- Gritty Gritty Bang Bang – Steeton Primary School
- Clearopathra – Thackley Primary School
- Wuthering Ice – Co-Op Academy Southfield

Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Women
Nikki’s leap into a male-dominated role showcases the power of passion and determination. She’s a beacon for women eyeing careers in logistics, transport, and winter road services.
Bradford is proud its first female gritter driver is paving the way for change, one icy road at a time.
