Hundreds of protesters took to the streets last night in a fiery show of defiance against Israel’s crackdown on activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla. The biggest showdown hit Brighton, where chaos unfolded at a major station and gridlock brought the city centre to a halt.
Brighton Station Descends Into Mayhem as Protesters Seize Control
More than 200 demonstrators stormed Brighton station on Thursday evening, quickly taking over the concourse before marching through the city. They clogged one of Brighton’s busiest junctions, grinding traffic to a standstill. Scenes like this played out across train stations nationwide as solidarity with the flotilla grew louder.
The protests were sparked after Israeli forces detained members of the Global Sumud Flotilla in the early hours of Thursday. The flotilla, which tried to breach the Gaza blockade, has fired up outrage among UK solidarity groups.
The Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign kept supporters in the loop, tweeting: “Hundreds now blocking the busiest junction in Brighton city centre. We are with you!”
Police Slam Warning: Rail Protesters Risk Arrest and Danger
The British Transport Police (BTP) hit back hard with a stark warning to anyone considering protests on railway property.
“This is a direct appeal to anyone considering protesting on the railway network this evening – I urge you to think again. The railway is an incredibly dangerous environment and stepping onto tracks could very easily result in serious injury or death. Everyone has the right to protest, but trespassing on the railway is a criminal offence, and those responsible can expect to be arrested.” – Assistant Chief Constable Sean O’Callaghan
BTP confirmed extra patrols have been deployed at key stations and they’re working closely with Network Rail to keep trains running and ensure safety.
Global Sumud Flotilla Detentions Spark UK-Wide Outcry
The Global Sumud Flotilla’s attempt to break the Gaza blockade has turned into a lightning rod for protests. Their detention in Israel has ignited a wave of solidarity demonstrations across the UK – and the protests show no signs of easing up anytime soon.
