Britain Girds for Wild New Year’s Eve with 75mph Winds and Torrential Rain

Brits face a stormy send-off to 2023 as high winds of up to 75mph and heavy rain lash parts of the country this New Year’s Eve. The Met Office has slapped on wind and rain warnings, triggering fears of flooding, power cuts, and major travel chaos.

Southern England and Wales in the Eye of the Storm

The fiercest gusts will hit southern England and Wales, with warnings in place from 11am on December 30 until 3am on January 1. Northern Ireland and Wales also face rainfall warnings on December 30, running through different periods of the day.

Meteorologists say a biting cold front will sweep east across England and Wales, whipping up winds from 45 to 50mph. Coastal hotspots could see stormier blasts between 65 and 75mph.

Flood Fears and Travel Turmoil Loom

Authorities urge locals to brace for flooding, road closures, and travel headaches. High winds threaten high-sided vehicles on exposed roads and bridges.

  • Up to 50mm of rain expected in North West Wales
  • 1 inch of rain forecast across other areas
  • Heavy downpours on already sodden ground raise alarm

The tempest follows hot on the heels of Storm Gerrit, which caused Christmas travel mayhem. Rail firms are sounding the alarm early, urging partygoers to travel ahead of New Year’s Eve to dodge disruptions linked to staff shortages and the weather.

Train Chaos as Operators Slash Services

Major rail firms including Avanti West Coast, LNER, and CrossCountry have axed services. Northern Railway has gone a step further, issuing a “do not travel” warning on six key routes on New Year’s Eve — covering Morecambe, Heysham, Lancaster, Preston, and beyond.

Meanwhile, Chiltern Railways warns of “high risk” for last-minute cancellations due to staff deficits and engineering works in Buckinghamshire.

Stay Safe and Stay Updated

Officials advise people in affected areas to stay alert for the latest weather news and travel info. Caution is urged for anyone venturing out during these extreme conditions. Emergency services are on high alert, ready to tackle whatever the storm throws at us as 2023 closes out.
