Maritime Heroes Snag 2023 Merchant Navy Medals

The Department for Transport has revealed this year’s Merchant Navy Medal winners, celebrating Britain’s bravest and most dedicated seafarers. Among the 11 honoured is Captain Ewan Rattray, who turned personal tragedy into a crusade for marine pilot safety, and Katy Womersley, a fierce advocate for diversity in the maritime industry.

Medals for Merchant Navy’s Finest

Since 2016, the Merchant Navy Medals have rewarded those who go above and beyond in Britain’s maritime world. The awards are the highest recognition in the sector, nominated by colleagues, friends, and family.

2023’s recipients include Captain Rattray from Aberdeen and diversity champion Katy Womersley from Glasgow, both standing out for their exceptional contributions.

From Injury to Industry Safety Campaigner: Captain Rattray’s Story

In 2019, Captain Rattray’s career as a maritime pilot was shattered when his leg was crushed boarding a ship. Despite multiple surgeries and a tough recovery, he refused to give up.

For five years, he has campaigned relentlessly for safer pilot transfer rules. His efforts pushed the International Maritime Organization to review safety regs, making life safer for pilots worldwide.

“The maritime industry has always held a special place in my heart. To be awarded the Merchant Navy Medal is a great honour,” said Captain Rattray. “There is a remarkable team of international pilots and seafarers tirelessly working behind the scenes to ensure safety. Being acknowledged for my contribution is humbling.”

Diversity Champion Katy Womersley Breaks Barriers

Katy Womersley has dedicated her career to training seafarers and smashing diversity barriers in the maritime world. She has inspired disadvantaged youth to take up maritime careers and managed hundreds of officer cadets.

She also supports maritime charities like the Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation, organising events to get children involved in maritime life and spearheading the first Women in Maritime forums in Scotland.

“It is a great honour to receive this prestigious award,” said Katy. “I have been inspired by so many great people committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment. I hope our conversations about diversity will spark real change for future generations.”

Tributes from the Top

Maritime Minister Baroness Vere praised the winners:

“I am delighted that 11 mariners, including Captain Rattray and Katy Womersley, have been selected for this special honour. Their dedication and service showcase the best of the UK’s maritime industry and set a shining example.”

Stuart Rivers, Chief Executive of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, added:
