Warning as Pensioners Targeted in ATM Card Theft Scam
Officers are probing a string of thefts where pensioners and other shoppers have had their bank cards stolen after using cash machines.
How the Scam Works
Victims are duped by scammers claiming the ATM is ‘not working’. As the target gets distracted, a second thief snatches their bank card. The victim is left thinking their card is stuck inside the machine.
Recent Thefts Across Kent
- On 14 May 2022, cards were stolen in Princes Avenue (Chatham), Knight Road (Rochester), and King Street (Gravesend).
- On 25 April, similar incidents occurred in Birling Avenue (Gillingham) and at 1 Shopping Centre, with one victim later losing a significant sum from their account.
Police Urge Caution
Detective Inspector Pete Smith said: “These offences are carried out by groups who target an area for a few hours before moving on. They work in pairs and pick on elderly or vulnerable people.”
“Take care using ATMs, especially those outdoors. Make sure no one is close enough to watch you enter your PIN.”
“Never talk to strangers when withdrawing cash. If you feel targeted, call 999 immediately.”
