Chris Froome Airlifted After Serious Training Crash
British cycling legend and four-time Tour de France winner, Chris Froome, has been airlifted to hospital after a severe training crash in France. The 40-year-old suffered serious injuries in a solo accident on Wednesday, with no other cyclists or vehicles involved.
Latest on Froome’s Injuries and Surgery
A statement on Froome’s official X (formerly Twitter) account revealed the grim details. Froome was taken to a hospital in Toulon and, thankfully, he remains stable with no head injuries. However, scans showed he has a pneumothorax, five broken ribs, and a fractured lumbar vertebra. He is set to undergo surgery this afternoon.
“Chris was airlifted to hospital in Toulon yesterday following a serious training crash (no other cyclists or vehicles were involved). Fortunately Chris is stable and did not sustain any head injuries, however, scans have confirmed a pneumothorax, five broken ribs and a lumbar vertebrae fracture, for which he will undergo surgery this afternoon. We will update on Chris’ condition following surgery.”
British Cycling Hero Faces Uncertain Future
Froome is one of Britain’s most successful cyclists. He won the Tour de France four times between 2013 and 2017, earned two Olympic bronze medals, and claimed multiple Grand Tour titles throughout his career.
This is not Froome’s first major crash. In 2019, a high-speed training accident left him with multiple fractures and sidelined him for an entire year.
The latest crash sparks fresh doubts over his racing career. Fans and fellow cyclists are flooding social media with messages of support and encouragement.
What’s Next for Froome?
Further updates on Froome’s condition are expected after his surgery in Toulon today. The cycling world will be watching closely, hoping their champion pulls through.
