Christmas Day Rescue Drama in the English Channel
The Dover RNLI Lifeboat and the Coastguard Rescue 163 helicopter from Lydd, Kent, were scrambled just before 5pm on Christmas Day. They responded to a Mayday call from multiple migrant vessels crossing the English Channel.
Migrants Spotted Near Sandettie Lightvessel
The emergency teams were tasked by HM Coastguard to assist a number of migrant boats spotted near the Sandettie lightvessel station in the North Sea. A French warship was shadowing the vessels as the rescue operations got underway.
Reports say at least one boat carries around 35-40 migrants struggling to make the perilous journey to the UK. Rescue Helicopter 163 has been hovering above, monitoring the situation.
Backup Called In as Rescue Intensifies
With the rescue operation escalating, a second RNLI lifeboat from Ramsgate was dispatched to the scene to recover more migrants.
If you spot anyone in distress at sea or along the coast, or suspect unexploded ordnance, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately. For safety tips, visit coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk.
Top Tip: Use ///what3words in Emergencies
Get help faster by giving emergency services your exact location using ///what3words. This clever system splits the world into 3m squares and assigns each a unique three-word code. It helps crews find you quicker, especially in remote spots like the Isle of Wight.
