UK Faces Another Week of Brutal Cold and Dry Weather
The UK is bracing for another week of biting cold and mostly dry skies. Temperatures are set to plunge even further this weekend, raising the risk of wintry chaos across the country.
High Pressure Brings Chilly, Dry Spells
A stubborn high-pressure system is gripping Britain, dragging temperatures well below seasonal norms. This comes after a soggy start to January, now replaced by noticeably drier days as the high settles in.
Southern England will feel the frost the most, with colder-than-average snaps sticking around through most of the week.
Wintry Showers and Snow on the Horizon
But don’t get too comfy—the weekend forecast hints at a weather U-turn. A northerly breeze is expected to sweep in, bringing showers along the coasts that will likely turn to snow, especially in northern regions.
“There will be a resurgence in the really cold weather through the weekend that spreads across the whole of the UK in early next week. Showers around the coasts will increasingly turn to snow, particularly in northern areas,” warned Will Lang, Met Office Head of Situational Awareness.
Potential for Disruptive Snowfalls Next Week
Looking ahead, forecasters are keeping a close eye on a possible snowy shake-up mid to late next week. Warmer Atlantic air pushing in from the southwest could clash with cold conditions, resulting in heavier snowfalls in some areas.
“There is potential for some disruptive snow next week as warmer air tries to move in. Some places could see substantial snow, but the details are still uncertain,” said Tony Wardle, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster.
Cold Weather Alerts Issued Across England
In response to the chill, the UK Health Security Agency has sounded the alarm, issuing yellow and amber cold weather alerts across England. The warnings highlight likely impacts on health and social care services.
Residents are urged to stay tuned to weather updates and follow official advice to stay safe during this frosty stretch.
