Police launched a major operation over the weekend to clamp down on illegal off-roading at the Salisbury Plain Military Training Area. Operation Aston, held on Saturday 11th April, targeted dangerous vehicle use and enforced strict byelaws across the site.
Joint Forces Take Down Rogue Riders and Drivers
Officers from Wiltshire Police Rural Crime Team teamed up with local Neighbourhood Policing units from Warminster, Devizes, and Tidworth. They worked alongside Salisbury Plain Land Operations and the Royal Military Police to tackle ongoing illegal activity, putting public and military personnel at risk.
“Not only does our presence allow us to catch people engaged in illegal activity, it also acts as a strong deterrent,” said Insp Andy Lemon, Wiltshire Police’s rural crime operational lead. “Salisbury Plain is primarily a military training area but also a spot where families come to walk and relax. Illegal off-roading endangers the public and disrupts military training.”
Seized: Unregistered Bikes and Cars Near Erlestoke
- Five motorbikes and two cars were caught without registration plates
- Suspected drink driver stopped, but no offence found
- Off-road bikes found in no-access zones
- Two further incidents of illegal off-roading were identified
The teams targeted hot spots known for repeat offenders. Officers also took the chance to engage with responsible users of the Plain, reassuring them that the crackdown is about keeping everyone safe.
“Our joint presence sends a clear message: dangerous and unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated,” Insp Lemon added. “The vast majority respect the rules and welcome these operations. We’re here to protect those training, walking their dogs, and enjoying the countryside from a reckless minority.”
Operation Aston made it clear — Salisbury Plain’s green spaces aren’t for thrill-seekers risking lives and ruining them for everyone else.
