Eastbourne Lifeboats Recover Two Bodies in Dramatic Beachy Head Rescue

Eastbourne’s lifeboat crews faced a gruelling day on Thursday, 3rd May, involved in a series of intense rescue operations off Beachy Head. The volunteer teams recovered two bodies following multiple incidents in the infamous cliff area.

Early Morning Search Ends Empty-Handed

The drama began at 7.30am when the Eastbourne inshore lifeboat (ILB) was called out to help coastguards and police search the Beachy Head shoreline. They were searching for a missing female reportedly in distress. Despite extensive efforts, nothing was found, and the ILB returned to base.

Car Plunges Off Cliff – Lifeboats Launch Again

Just four hours later at 11.30am, lifeboats were scrambled once more after reports that a car had driven off the cliffs at Beachy Head. Both the ILB and Eastbourne’s all-weather lifeboat (ALB) rushed to the scene.

The submerged wreck was located, but rescuers couldn’t tell if anyone was still inside. Searches around the site yielded no immediate sign of survivors, and with tides not in their favour, the crews had to stand down until low tide.

Bodies Recovered Amid Heartbreaking Scenes

Later, the ILB was tasked with recovering the body of a woman who had washed ashore at Birling Gap. Then at 3.10pm, the lifeboats relaunched to retrieve a male occupant from the submerged car. Rescue teams bravely cut him free from the wreckage and brought him back to shore more than 12 hours after the first call.

RNLI Praise for Lifeboat Crew’s Bravery

“Most people do not witness the horrific scenes that these young men dealt with today in a lifetime. They are a credit to the station and the RNLI for the manner in which they conducted themselves and the way the casualties were handled with utmost respect and dignity,” commended RNLI spokesman Bob Jeffery.

Eastbourne’s volunteer lifeboat crews worked tirelessly through the day, showcasing courage and professionalism in the face of tragedy at one of Britain’s most perilous coastlines.
