Fatal Crash Shuts Coastbound A2 Near Canterbury
Police and Highways England have shut a stretch of the coastbound A2 near Wincheap, on Canterbury’s outskirts, after a deadly collision in the early hours of Sunday.
The smash happened just before the A2050 off-slip at around 1am. Specialist Collision Investigators are now probing the scene to uncover what caused the tragedy.
Weather May Be a Key Factor
Kent Roads Policing officers have been scouring the crash site for clues. One major lead under scrutiny is the fierce weather on Saturday night—gusts hit up to 60mph with heavy rain pounding much of Kent.
The fatal collision happened inside a roadworks zone on the A2, between the A28 junction at Wincheap and the A2050 junction near Canterbury East. Some drivers remain trapped within the closure.
Massive Traffic Chaos With Long Diversions
The disruption isn’t ending soon. Traffic heading away from M2 Junction 7 (Brenley Corner) towards Dover is also snarled up. This is due to a separate weekend closure of the A2 up to the A28, forcing a lengthy diversion.
- The diversion starts at M2 Junction 7 (Brenley Corner)
- Continues along the A299 Eastbound towards Cliffsend near Ramsgate
- Then heads south on the A256 before rejoining the A2 at Whitfield, north of Dover
Kent Police have been approached for comment but have yet to respond.
