Just before 9pm on Wednesday, crews rushed to a property on Thomas Grant Avenue following reports of a burning smell and blown electrics. A woman raised the alarm, prompting an urgent response from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

After a thorough search, firefighters discovered the charred remains of an overheated Samsung charger. The device had the potential to cause a devastating fire that could have gutted the home.

Strong Safety Message from Fire Service

Watch Manager Rob Dellow issued a stark warning: “People leave their phone chargers plugged in all the time when they aren’t being used. Turn them off and unplug them.”

He added, “Unless an electrical item is designed to be left on unattended – such as a fridge or freezer – it should always be switched off.”

Rob also stressed the importance of smoke alarms: “We advise that all homes should be fitted with working smoke alarms, and these should be tested regularly.”
