Terraced House Blaze Likely Sparked by Candle
A fire broke out on the first floor of a terraced house, damaging part of the property. Firefighters rescued three women from the scene, who were then checked over by London Ambulance Service crews.
Accidental Candle Fire Sparks Warning from Fire Brigade
The London Fire Brigade confirmed the fire likely started accidentally due to a candle. A spokesperson warned, “Candles are one of the most common causes of fires in the home and you should be careful when using them.”
They added, “Never leave candles unattended and keep them away from anything flammable like curtains, furniture, or clothes. We recommend swapping traditional candles for LED flameless ones as they are much safer.”
Quick Response from Firefighters
The Brigade was called at 2:18pm and had the fire under control by 3:23pm. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters from Orpington, Beckenham, and Lee Green stations attended the blaze.
Top Candle Safety Tips to Prevent Blazes
- Always extinguish candles, incense, and oil burners before leaving a room or going to bed.
- Place candles in heat-resistant holders on stable surfaces where they cannot be knocked over.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials such as curtains, furniture, clothes, and hair.
- Tea lights can get extremely hot and melt plastic surfaces if not properly contained.
