Tense Skies Over Baltic: German and British Jets Scramble to Intercept Russian Warplanes
Russian Jets Spark Military Alert
The Luftwaffe revealed a high-stakes aerial encounter as German and British Eurofighters were scrambled to identify three Russian military aircraft buzzing without transponders over the Baltic Sea. The suspects: two SU-27 Flankers and an IL-20 reconnaissance plane.
“Reconnaissance flights intercepted. German and British Eurofighters were alerted to identify three military aircraft. The two SU-27 Flankers and a IL-20 from 1 were flying again without transponder signals in international airspace over the Baltic Sea,” the Luftwaffe tweeted.
UK Takes the Helm in Baltic Air Policing
The UK recently stepped in to lead NATO’s Baltic air policing mission, replacing previous forces. Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have no air force jets of their own, so NATO patrols ensure their skies stay safe. But Russian military jets often skirt these zones, flying between Russia and Kaliningrad – a heavily militarised Russian exclave sandwiched between NATO members Poland and Lithuania.
Russian Jets Also Spotted Near Arctic
Meanwhile, in a chilling reminder of heightened tensions, the Royal Norwegian Air Force tracked a squadron of Russian warplanes flying uncomfortably close in international airspace over the Barents Sea in the Arctic just days earlier.
