Isle of Wight Cracks Down on Hidden Sugar with New SUGAR SMART Campaign

A bold new initiative, SUGAR SMART Isle of Wight, is set to tackle the islanders’ sweet tooth by shining a light on hidden sugars lurking in everyday foods. Organisations, businesses, and residents are being urged to join the campaign and take action to slash sugar intake.

Too Much Sugar, Too Many Problems

Research reveals Island locals—especially kids—are consuming shockingly high levels of sugar. Overindulging ramps up calorie intake, fuelling weight gain and obesity. The consequences are grim, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and a host of social and mental health issues like stress, depression, and bullying.

Dental decay, another costly side effect, threatens families and pounds the NHS with extra bills.

Community-Backed Drive Against Hidden Sugars

The SUGAR SMART push follows a 2016 Island-wide survey where locals demanded action on sneaky sugar in their diets. Now, the Isle of Wight Council is teaming up with the NHS Trust, leisure services, Chamber of Commerce, and others to boost awareness about sugar content in everyday food.

“We know obesity has many causes — genetics, behaviour, environment and culture,” said Councillor Clare Mosdell, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care and Public Health. “SUGAR SMART Isle of Wight is a brilliant chance to unite and raise awareness of hidden sugars.”

She added, “I encourage all Islanders, employers, food businesses, retailers and schools to pledge their support and help spread the word.”

GP Dr Ben Browne from East Cowes Medical Centre, part of the campaign team, said: “Changing eating habits is tough, but every small step from local partners can help us eat less sugar and make healthier choices.”

How Much Sugar Are We Actually Eating?

  • Age 4-6: Max 19g (5 sugar cubes)
  • Age 7-10: Max 24g (6 sugar cubes)
  • 11 and over: Max 30g (7 sugar cubes)

Yet many adults are gobbling up double these amounts. Worse, children could be consuming two to three times the recommended limit!

SUGAR SMART isn’t about banning sugar, but about making smarter choices by cutting down on junk food ads and boosting healthier options.

SUGAR SMART Means Choice and Fairness

By promoting clearer info and better food options, the campaign hopes to empower Islanders to cut back on hidden sugars—and save their health and wallets.
