Secret Tunnel Discovered Beneath Collapsed Surrey Road

An underground tunnel has been found eight metres below Godstone High Street, where a major road collapse happened in February 2025. Surrey County Council confirmed the startling discovery today (5 June).

The Hidden Void Emerges

Highways Officers carrying out borehole testing used a manual camera to uncover a mysterious void beneath the road surface. The tunnel’s existence has sparked urgent specialist surveys to investigate its length, purpose, and possible link to the road collapse.

Meanwhile, SES Water continues probing a burst pipe initially blamed for the collapse, keeping local residents on edge as investigations press on.

Months of Repairs Ahead

Restoring utilities and rebuilding the shattered infrastructure is set to take several months. Temporary gas, electricity, water, and telecom connections are in place, but permanent fixes must be scheduled before full roadworks can begin.

Surrey County Council has outlined a three-phase plan:

  1. Reconnect Utilities: All service lines to homes and businesses must be restored.
  2. Design Repair Strategy: Detailed surveys will shape the repair sequence and plan.
  3. Full Reconstruction: The road, pavements, and all affected areas will be rebuilt before final site clearance.

Council’s Response

Matt Furniss, Surrey’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport, and Economic Growth, said:

“This remains a complex incident with ongoing investigations by Highways Officers, specialist teams, and utility companies.”

“We must fully understand the collapse cause to repair safely and effectively. We hope to reopen the road this December, but safety is our top priority.”

Highways Officers remain on-site daily and recently held a public meeting to update local residents and businesses.

Local Businesses Feel the Strain

With the High Street road closure stretching into its fourth month, local shops and residents have suffered serious disruption. The council pledges to do all it can to minimise further impact during the lengthy recovery and repair process.
