Gosport Pedestrian Bridge Shut for Month-Long Repairs
The popular pedestrian and cycle bridge over Forton Lake in Gosport is set to close from 1 April until around 26 April for urgent repairs.
Bridge Closure to Fix Vital Mechanism
Gosport Borough Council announced the closure to fix the lifting mechanism that lets boats pass underneath. The 170m bridge, a key millennium project, needs major work on crucial parts.
Massive Repairs Underway
- Replacement of the chain holding the 23-tonne counterweight
- New motors and gearboxes
- Upgraded drive gear
- Overhaul of control and safety systems
Council leader Cllr Mark Hook said: “To enable the repairs to go ahead as safely and efficiently as possible, we need to close the bridge. We’re sorry that people will have to find alternative routes for a time, while we do this essential work.”
Expect Detours and Delays
Commuters and cyclists are warned to plan ahead as the closure could disrupt local travel for about four weeks. The council promises the work is vital to keep the bridge safe and fully operational for years to come.
