New Army Living Quarters Take Shape at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

The British Army is upgrading its barracks! The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and Ministry of Defence have kicked off construction on fresh Single Living Accommodation (SLA) at the iconic Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS).

This marks a major leap forward in providing modern, comfortable homes for officer trainees. The second SLA block is now officially underway, promising fit-for-purpose accommodation with a green edge.

High-Tech, Green and Ready for Tomorrow’s Soldiers

The new SLA buildings will house both Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Other Ranks. Built using innovative Modular Methods of Construction (MMC), these blocks aim to slash energy use and running costs.

  • Solar photovoltaic panels soak up renewable energy
  • Efficient air source heat pumps keep things cosy
  • Smart building management tech maximizes sustainability

This effort is part of a wider Army push to raise living standards while cutting carbon footprints. DIO insists it’s about quality accommodation and greener living combined.

Collaboration at the Core of Success

The construction contract has gone to Reds10, specialists in eco-friendly builds. Their Chairman, Paul Ruddick, says feedback from Army personnel shaped the design, ensuring the new homes meet real needs.

“Learning from previous projects at Sandhurst helped us create accommodation that’s practical and sustainable,” said Ruddick.

DIO’s Senior Project Manager Neil Hague called the build “a landmark in Defence infrastructure,” while Brigadier Pete Quaite OBE highlighted the boost to both comfort and estate resilience the new SLA brings.

A Smart Investment in Future Army Leaders

Once complete, these smart new quarters will not only improve daily life for RMAS personnel but also reflect the Army’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Future officers will benefit from top-tier living spaces as they train at one of the UK’s most prestigious military colleges, setting the standard for Army accommodation nationwide.
