Kent Police Launch New Aviation Volunteer Patrols
Kent Police has taken to the skies with its brand-new Aviation Community Police Volunteers (CPVs) scheme. These sky-high volunteers will patrol the county’s airspace, spotting and reporting incidents from missing persons to traffic chaos, and supporting specially planned operations.
First Recruits Celebrate at Rochester Airport
The first batch of airborne volunteers marked their passing-out with a ceremony at Rochester Airport on 21 September 2021. Top brass were on hand, including Superintendent Jason Wenlock, head of Kent Police’s Citizens in Policing, and Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott.
“We benefit so much from the many public-spirited individuals who give up their free time to support their police colleagues and help keep the people of Kent safe,” said Superintendent Wenlock.
A Volunteer Role for Every Skill
Wenlock revealed Kent’s CPV scheme offers more varied volunteer roles than anywhere else in the UK. Whether you own a horse, live by the coast, are passionate about protecting dogs, or have a 4×4 to spare, there’s a role for you.
“The Aviation CPV role is for those talented individuals who have access to light aircraft or helicopters, bringing real value to our daily police operations,” Wenlock added.
He paid tribute to all volunteers, especially the new aviation pilots. “They are a credit to the force, and their contributions are immeasurable.”
How to Join Kent’s Aviation Volunteers
- Must hold a private or commercial pilot licence for your aircraft type – Group A, microlight, gyrocopter, helicopter, or Group B
- Non-pilots can join as observers, partnering pilots to spot incidents from above
