HM Coastguard Goes Full Throttle with Nearly 500 AEDs Across UK

AEDs Now Cover the UK’s Most Remote Spots

HM Coastguard has just boosted emergency response big time. They’ve installed almost 500 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across vehicles, stations, and offices. This makes their coverage the widest of any emergency service in the UK.

The move plugs deadly gaps in remote communities where quick access to life-saving tech has been scarce. Now, whether it’s coastal rescues or rural emergencies, help is just a heartbeat away.

Life-Saving Tech in Every Corner

From emergency response vehicles and coastal officer cars to every rescue coordination centre, AEDs are everywhere HM Coastguard operates. Even Maritime and Coastguard Agency buildings and marine offices are kitted out, giving staff protection at work.

Crucial Seconds Count, Says Medical Chief

“Minutes really do count in the event of a cardiac arrest, and having quick access to an AED can mean the difference between someone going home to their loved one or not,” said Dr Paddy Morgan, Medical Director of HM Coastguard.

He added that the Coastguard plays a vital role alongside other emergency services to slash response times and maximise chances of survival in cardiac emergencies.

Chief Coastguard: Safety Tops Our 200-Year Agenda

“For more than 200 years, our goal has been to keep people safe at the coast and at sea, and caring for those around us as well as our own people is inextricably linked to that,” said Peter Mizen, Chief Coastguard.

“As the national maritime emergency service, we serve local communities, often in isolated rural spots, providing critical backup to fellow emergency heroes. By keeping AEDs in our vehicles, we ensure they’re ready to deploy during safety patrols and public events.”
