New Online Portal Lets Home Workers Claim Tax Relief Fast

Launched on 1 October, a simple new online portal lets employees working from home claim tax relief on extra household costs. The move helps those forced to log in from their kitchen tables during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Get Up to £6 a Week Tax-Free for Home Office Expenses

Since 6 April 2020, employers can pay staff up to £6 a week tax-free to cover additional home-working expenses. If your boss hasn’t handed out this cash, you can now claim tax relief through the new portal.

Basic rate taxpayers get 20% back on the £6 weekly claim – that’s £1.20 a week. Higher rate taxpayers receive £2.40 weekly back. Over a year, this could slash your tax bill by up to £124.80, putting extra quid back in your pocket.

Easy Claims & Tax Code Updates – No Fuss!

“We want everyone to get the money that they are entitled to, so we’ve made the online service as easy to use as we can – it takes just a few minutes to make a claim,” said Karl Khan, HMRC’s Interim Director General of Customer Services.

Once approved, HMRC updates your tax code for 2020-2021, and you see the savings via your pay slip, continuing until March 2021.

Work Uniform & Expenses Relief for NHS and Care Staff

HMRC reminds frontline heroes like healthcare and care home staff they can claim tax relief on work-related costs, including uniform cleaning, repairs, and professional subscriptions.

Thousands of vital workers can claim extra cash simply by applying online. Those dealing directly with HMRC keep all their entitled money, unlike many who pay agents fees to claim.

More than 500,000 people used agents in 2018-2019, costing them fees unnecessarily. If you’re paid through PAYE, click, claim and keep every penny you’re owed – quick and easy.
