Massive LPG Tanker Explosion Rocks A1 Motorway Near Caserta
A colossal LPG tanker blew up in a fiery collision on the A1 motorway near the Teano service area in Italy’s Caserta province. Just before 5 p.m., the giant lorry smashed into the back of another heavy vehicle, triggering a huge blaze and an earth-shattering explosion.
Blast Leaves Motorway and Service Station in Ruins
The crash at kilometre 709 ignited the LPG tanker during firefighting efforts, punching deep craters into the road. The nearby service station also took a heavy hit, suffering serious structural damage. Firefighters from Teano, Caserta, Aversa, and Cassino raced to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames before disaster worsened.
Swift Evacuation Prevents Casualties
Staff and travellers at the service area were quickly evacuated. Miraculously, despite the spectacular explosion, no serious injuries or deaths were reported. All drivers involved walked away unharmed.
Christmas Travel Chaos as Major Motorway Shuts
The explosion forced authorities to close the critical motorway stretch between Caianello and Capua in both directions just ahead of the Christmas travel surge. While the northbound lane to Rome reopened late that evening, the southbound route to Naples remains closed, leaving motorists braced for long delays and frustrating detours.
