Ian Wright and Rocastle’s Family Launch New 3G Football Pitch
Ian Wright teamed up with David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle’s family to unveil a brand new small-sided 3G football turf pitch. The pitch overlooks the very estate where both legends grew up, grinding their skills on the cold, concrete playground before soaring together at Arsenal FC.
Pitch to Serve Local Community and Clubs
The top-tier facility will be managed by 123 Community Trust, hosting Premier League Kicks, walking football for adults, Weetabix Wildcats, Millwall Lionesses, and even Millwall Roman LGBTQ+ sessions. Local heroes Hillyfielders FC will also get their training boots on here throughout the week.
Ian Wright Pays Tribute to Rocky with Powerful Words
“Seeing this pitch looking so good makes me really proud. It’s going to change the lives of so many kids around where I grew up,” said Wright. “This is more than a pitch — it’s a tribute to my dear friend David Rocastle. I hope it inspires the next generation to fall in love with football. Back then, we spent hours on a concrete patch. Now these kids have a proper pitch. It’s so exciting!”
“Huge thanks to the Football Foundation, EA SPORTS, and all funding partners for making this happen. This safe space gives kids from Turnham Academy and beyond the chance to reach their full potential.”
Officials Back £200,000 Project for Grassroots Football
Robert Sullivan, CEO of the Football Foundation, celebrated the project’s impact, highlighting the pathway from local play to professional ranks.
David Jackson, EA SPORTS Brand VP, said: “With EA SPORTS FC FUTURES, we’re ushering in a new era for football, supporting grassroots football and connecting the next generation of fans.”
Minister for Sport, Stuart Andrew, added: “This fantastic project, funded by Government, Premier League, and The FA, will boost grassroots sport and encourage young people to get active.”
Turnham Academy and Community Celebrate New Legacy Pitch
Miz Mann, Executive Headteacher at Turnham Academy, said: “This pitch will be a game-changer for our pupils and the local community. Thanks to the Football Foundation and EA SPORTS, the facilities will be used all year round. Ian and David’s legacy means so much to us. Hopefully, the next Rocky and Wrighty are kicking around here right now!”
Lionel Stanhope, mural artist, added: “It’s been an honour to help pay tribute to two true legends of the game. I’m proud this pitch will mean so much to the local community.”
