Big changes coming to M2 Junction 5 in Kent as £100 million upgrade gets underway
Major revamp to slip roads and junction approaches
Work is in full swing at M2 Junction 5, Kent, with a massive upgrade aimed at improving slip roads and junction approaches. The project kicked off in autumn 2021 and is set to run until 2025. The price tag? A whopping £50 million to £100 million.
New Church Hill crossover opens – but no U-turns allowed
The spotlight is on the Church Hill crossover, now open for southbound traffic on the A249 heading towards Stockbury. But don’t expect to flick a U-turn here — drivers can’t switch back onto the northbound A249 via this crossover. Instead, motorists must carry on south and use the next suitable turning point.
Overnight A249 closures bring diversions in January
Heads up, night travellers! In January 2024, expect overnight closures on the A249 southbound near Stockbury Roundabout. Work is underway to build a new link road from South Green Lane to the roundabout. The shutdown is planned for the nights of 17 and 18 January, from 10:30 pm to 5 am.
During these times, traffic will be rerouted via the M2, A229, M20, and A249. Non-motorway drivers will follow an alternative path along the A249, A2, A229, and back to the A249.
Smoother, safer journeys ahead for Kent drivers
These improvements will boost traffic flow, road safety, and access around Junction 5. Commuters and travellers will notice the difference as Kent’s road network gets a serious upgrade.
Authorities urge drivers to stay tuned for updates on disruptions and plan ahead. Despite inevitable some delays, the aim is to keep trouble to a minimum during this essential overhaul.
