Island Roads Staff Roll Up Sleeves to Boost Local Nursery
Staff from Island Roads have pitched in to spruce up Care in the Garden, a community nursery on the Isle of Wight. As part of their company volunteering scheme, highways operatives dug out and laid a new footpath at the nursery’s entrance and installed a fresh sign to make the facility easier to find.
Community Nursery Uses Gardening to Change Lives
Care in the Garden, set up in 2012, is a not-for-profit based at Palmers Brook Community Nursery, Park Road. It offers gardening and woodworking work experience and training for people with extra support needs, helping boost their confidence and self-esteem.
The Isle of Wight company offers up to two days’ paid leave annually for staff to volunteer with local charities, schools, and green projects. Hundreds of days have already been logged helping causes linked to education, health, the environment, and the local economy.
Local Leaders Praise Island Roads’ Community Spirit

“This nursery is a vital part of the community. I’m delighted Island Roads staff went out of their way to support such a worthy cause,” added Councillor Barry Abraham, Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing.
“We’re proud to support this fantastic community project and hope it keeps thriving,” said Paul Gibb-Narey, Highways Supervisor at Island Roads.
