Housing Trust Caught Overcharging Tenants in Rent Scandal
The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) has slapped Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) with a breach notice after uncovering unfair rent hikes. The culprit? JRHT wrongly labelled some homes as supported housing, pushing up rents unjustly.
Faulty Rent Setting Hits ‘Fair Rent’ Tenants
Further investigations revealed more mistakes in how JRHT set rents, especially for tenants under ‘fair rent’ agreements. These errors mean many households have been hit with higher bills they shouldn’t have faced.
JRHT Admits Guilt and Scrambles to Fix Mess
Owning up to the blunder, JRHT self-reported the breach and is now working with external experts to sort the problem. They’ve launched a full review of their rent-setting across all properties. The trust pledges to pay back tenants who’ve been overcharged and overhaul their rent policies to meet regulatory standards.
Karen Doran, Director of Regulatory Engagement at RSH, said: “We’re concerned that JRHT failed to set rents correctly, impacting tenants unfairly. Thankfully, they’re now cooperating fully to fix the situation and ensure fair rent charges moving forward.”
