Labour MP Jack Dromey Dies Suddenly Aged 73
Jack Dromey, the veteran Labour MP and husband of party heavyweight Harriet Harman, has died suddenly from natural causes at the age of 73. He was found dead in his Erdington flat this morning.
Tributes Flood In For Dedicated Labour Stalwart
The Labour Party released a statement on behalf of Dromey’s family: “Jack Dromey MP died suddenly this morning aged 73 in his flat in Erdington. He had been a dedicated Member of Parliament for Birmingham Erdington since 2010. He was a much loved husband, father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed.”
Sir Keir Starmer praised Dromey’s lifelong commitment to social justice:
“Jack lived his commitment to social justice every day. The proud son of Irish parents, he stood up for working people through the Labour movement, becoming deputy general secretary of the UK’s largest trade union before entering Parliament. From supporting the Grunwick strike—where he met Harriet—to representing Birmingham Erdington, Jack was highly respected across Parliament.”
Political Rivals Pay Their Respects
Former PM Boris Johnson expressed he was “deeply saddened” by the news, sending thoughts to Harriet and the family. Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi called the death “shocking and heart-breaking.”
Speaker of the House Sir Lindsay Hoyle remarked:
“We are all in disbelief that the life-force that was Jack Dromey has died – this is another sad day for the House and a bad start to the year.”
Jack Dromey’s sudden passing leaves a huge gap in British politics, especially within the Labour movement, where he was a tireless champion for working-class rights and social justice.
