Lewisham Council Set to Back New Surrey Canal Station Funding

Lewisham Council’s Cabinet is gearing up to approve vital funds for the long-awaited Surrey Canal station in east London. The meeting on September 10 will focus heavily on allocating Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL) money to push this key transport project forward.

Where and Why Surrey Canal Station Matters

The proposed station will sit between Queens Road Peckham and Surrey Quays on the Windrush line. The idea first surfaced during the Overground extension to Clapham Junction in the early 2010s. It’s now deemed “critical” for unlocking huge housing potential and boosting local connectivity for residents, both current and future.

Funding Plans and Development Timeline Revealed

SCIL funds, collected from developers, help deliver essential infrastructure like hospitals, schools, social care, and transport. The money will specifically assist Transport for London (TfL) with the detailed design of Surrey Canal station. If approved, design work is set to kick off in early 2026 and wrap up by early 2028.

Funding Woes and Future Hopes

Back in 2018, TfL secured a government Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) grant for this project and others along the Windrush line. But budget cuts forced a pause on the station’s plans in 2021, as other projects took priority. Surrey Canal is part of phase two in a two-stage programme.

Phase one delivered step-free access at Surrey Quays and boosted train capacity from 16 to 20 trains per hour. Last year, TfL bagged £25 million from Renewal Group, developers behind 3,500 new South Bermondsey homes, although affordable housing levels have fallen.

A Cabinet report hints TfL aims to seek more HIF cash for phase two. Approval of SCIL funding by Lewisham Council is crucial to making Surrey Canal station a reality.
