Portsmouth’s First Ever Indoor Skatepark Set to Open
A brand-new undercover skatepark is gearing up to launch in Portsmouth, transforming the old Sainsbury’s building on Commercial Road into a buzzing hub for skaters and more. Dubbed Pitt Street – an Undercover Skatepark Project, this will be the city’s first fully-covered skate facility.
Former Supermarket Becomes Skate Haven
The skatepark will occupy the vast former Sainsbury’s site at the foot of the M275, covering over 3 acres. With a massive 290-space car park, visitors can easily access the venue via Andrew Bell Street from the south or Fitzherbert Street to the north.
Portsmouth city council snapped up the building after Sainsbury’s shut down in January 2021. The council’s backing has been crucial, granting a temporary licence last year and funneling funds from Charles Dickens ward councillors to get the project off the ground.
Ramps, Rails, Roller Discos and More
Inside, skaters can expect ramps, rails, and ledges tailored for all skill levels. But it’s not just for boarders—there’ll be space for art groups, roller discos, plus a café and shop for socialising.
“We are so proud that our project has reached the point it has and we’re massively grateful for the support we have gained from our councillors,” said project co-founder Jacob Skinner. “We’re very excited for the future of Pitt Street – an Undercover Skatepark Project.”
Community Cheers on New Hangout Spot
Local councillor Cal Corkery hailed the project as a “major boost” for the Charles Dickens ward. “We have been really impressed by the vision for a new inclusive community facility right in the heart of Charles Dickens ward,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to be able to help support the project through use of our ward community funds.”
Community campaigner Yinka Adeniran echoed the sentiment: “Living in the area I know how important it is for our kids and young people to have things to do and places to go which keeps them off the streets. I’m looking forward to working with the Undercover Skatepark team to ensure this project succeeds and becomes a valuable community resource.”
Skatepark Opening in Spring
With plans to open as soon as spring, Pitt Street is set to become Portsmouth’s hotspot for skating, art, and social life. Watch this space!
