Liquid Ban Backlash: Chaos Hits Birmingham City Airport
Mayhem erupted at Birmingham City Airport as passengers faced long queues following the Government’s shock move to reinstate the 100ml liquids ban. The restrictions came into force at midnight Sunday, sparking frustration and delays across the UK’s airports.
Social Media Outraged as Passengers Struggle
Videos flooding social media show desperate travellers stuck in tents and cramped car parks, battling to get through security. Two flyers, Wes and Pete, vented their frustration early Monday morning:
“Just joined the Birmingham Airport security queue. It’s 5:18am – no fast track for us. This is awful for anyone elderly, disabled, with kids, or if it starts raining.”
The lack of clear communication from the @bhx_official team only fueled the chaos.
Other Major Airports Slam on the Brakes
Birmingham is not alone. All UK airports have swiftly reinstated the 100ml liquid restrictions, reversing the earlier relaxation meant to speed up security checks. The previous rules were ditched thanks to Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC), which use hi-tech 3D CT scanners to scan bags like never before.
Why the 100ml Rule Returns
The controversial liquids rule was first introduced in 2006 after a thwarted terror plot targeting London-to-US flights using liquid explosives. Authorities insist the temporary return is a precaution while security threats are assessed.
