M11 Shutdown After Trailer Full of Migrants Found
The M11 motorway between junctions 8 and 9 is locked down after police discovered a trailer packed with migrants on Wednesday evening.
Massive Traffic Chaos as Police Close Both Directions
Essex Police requested full closures in both directions. Highways England quickly acted, sparking tailbacks and snarling traffic for hundreds of drivers.
The official diversion routes are:
- Northbound: Exit at Junction 8, then A120 west, A10 north, rejoin M11 at Junction 10
- Southbound: Exit at Junction 10, A10 south, A120 east, rejoin M11 at Junction 8
Two Migrants Flee, Police Launch Helicopter Hunt
When officers opened the trailer, two migrants bolted. A police helicopter has been deployed to track them down.
Medical Teams Rush to Aid Migrants Found Inside
Paramedics and a HART team rushed to the scene to tend to the remaining migrants, who had been cramped inside the trailer for some time. They received water and medical care on-site.
Police confirmed the migrants will be handed over to immigration officials. The driver is understood to have been questioned but it’s unclear if they’ve been arrested.
