M2 Shut After Distressed Person Threatens to Jump from Medway Bridge
Chaos hit Kent’s busy M2 motorway on Saturday evening after a distressed individual threatened to jump from Medway Bridge. Police and Highways England swiftly shut down the coastbound carriageway between Junction 2 and Junction 3 to tackle the tense stand-off.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Just after 7.30pm, multiple drivers alerted police to the person balanced precariously on the far side of the safety barrier. Officers quickly arrived, joined by specialist negotiators who spent two hours talking the person down.
A lifeboat from the RNLI was placed on standby but wasn’t needed, as the drama unfolded on the bridge rather than water.
Person Saved, Traffic Chaos Continues
The closure was lifted shortly after 9.10pm when the individual agreed to leave with officers. But the M2 remains snarled with heavy traffic well into the night, frustrating motorists trying to escape the gridlock.
Police urged drivers to expect delays and stay safe while patience is needed on the roads tonight.
