Botulism Outbreak at Bordeaux Wine Bar Sparks UK Health Alert
Health chiefs in the UK have launched an urgent plea after a deadly botulism outbreak linked to a Bordeaux restaurant. One person has died and eight others, including some Irish diners, are hospitalised after eating sardines at Tchin Tchin Wine Bar between September 4 and 10.
Rare But Deadly Food Poisoning Strikes
Botulism, a rare but serious illness caused by a powerful toxin attacking the nervous system, has rocked the French wine hotspot. The UK Health Security Agency stressed the disease isn’t contagious and poses no wider public risk — only those who ate sardines at Tchin Tchin during that week are at risk.
Spot the Symptoms: Time Is Critical
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty swallowing
- Speech troubles
- Possible diarrhoea and vomiting
Symptoms normally appear 12 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food. Botulism can cause paralysis and vision problems, and has a fatality rate between 5% and 10%.
Urgent Warning to Diners
If you dined at Tchin Tchin Wine Bar in Bordeaux within the crucial dates, you must contact emergency services immediately for assessment and treatment.
