M25 Set for Second Full Shutdown This Year
The M25 in Surrey is gearing up for its second full closure in 2024. From May 10th to 13th, the motorway will shut between junctions 9 and 10 as National Highways pushes ahead with major upgrades. The works are designed to boost safety and cut pollution on this busy stretch.
Massive Bridge Installation Underway
A highlight of the project is the installation of a brand-new bridge. This includes 68 hefty beams weighing 16 tonnes each, plus four giant 40-tonne beams. These upgrades are part of a wider plan to improve road safety and reduce environmental impact along the M25.
Travel Warnings and Diversions in Place
Jonathan Wade from National Highways urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel during the closure. He warned that this shutdown differs from the March closure with longer detours expected—especially for overheight vehicles.
- Four diversion routes will operate, catering to heavy traffic flows both clockwise and anticlockwise between Gatwick and Heathrow.
- The closure runs from 9pm on May 10th to 6am on May 13th.
More Closures on the Horizon
The M25 between junctions 9 (A243 Leatherhead) and 10 (A3 Wisley) sees up to 6,000 vehicles per hour at weekends. National Highways stressed the importance of smart travel plans and following diversion signs to avoid chaos.
After May’s shutdown, three more closures are planned between July and year-end to continue upgrading this vital London orbital route. The £317 million programme aims to increase lane capacity and make journeys safer and smoother for motorists.
