M27 Motorway Shut After Horror Crash and Massive Fuel Spill
A stretch of the M27 is closed this morning following a serious crash between a heavy goods vehicle and a car. The smash left behind a huge fuel spill, sparking a major clean-up operation.
M27 Eastbound Closed Between Fareham and Portsmouth
The closure affects the eastbound carriageway between Junction 11 (Fareham North) and Junction 12 (Portsmouth North / M275).
Police, emergency services, and traffic officers rushed to the scene to manage the incident and keep motorists safe.
Road Users Urged to Follow Diversions
Drivers heading east should follow the ‘Hollow Circle’ diversion signs:
- Exit the M27 at Junction 11
- Take the 3rd exit onto the A27
- Continue through Portchester and Portsbridge Interchange
- Re-join the M27 at Junction 12
Motorists are warned to expect delays and consider alternative routes.
Long Roadworks Expected After Fuel Spill
The closure is expected to last several hours. Recovery teams must remove the damaged vehicles and inspect the road surface for damage caused by the fuel spill.
An 11:10am update from the Highways Agency confirmed part of the carriageway has been damaged and needs resurfacing.
“The affected section will require extensive resurfacing, which could take several hours,” said officials.
Overnight Closure Confirmed for Emergency Repairs
At 1:30am, Highways England announced the M27 closure will remain in place overnight to allow emergency resurfacing work to be completed safely.
Commuters should brace for continued disruption and check for live updates before travelling.
