A driver has been hailed the “luckiest person in the world” after a terrifying motorway drama on the M6. A wheel from a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) broke loose, crossing the central barrier and smashing head-on into his car.
Miracle Escape on the M6
The rogue HGV wheel and tyre came hurtling from the opposite carriageway before slamming into the oncoming car with brutal force. Despite the shocking impact, the driver managed to steer his damaged vehicle safely onto the hard shoulder and escape unscathed.
Authorities confirmed the driver suffered only minor injuries.
Father and Son’s Close Call
In a chilling twist, the driver’s young son nearly joined him on the journey — and would have been sitting exactly where the deadly wheel struck.
“Thankfully, the child was unable to come along,” said an officer from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU). “It doesn’t bear thinking about what could have happened had his son been in the car seat.”
Photos of the wreck show the car’s front end severely damaged, laying bare the terrifying force of the bizarre crash.
Probe Launched Into HGV Wheel Detachment
The RPU has opened an investigation to find out why the HGV wheel came off. They want to determine if mechanical faults or maintenance failures were to blame for the potentially deadly incident.
The unit praised the driver’s quick thinking, saying his calm response probably saved lives.
Warning to Drivers Nationwide
This harrowing episode is a stark reminder of the vital importance of regular vehicle maintenance, especially for commercial trucks where a single failure can cause catastrophic consequences. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy at all times.
