Tragedy at River Lee Canal: Young Man Dies After Being Pulled From Water

A man in his 20s has died after being rescued from the River Lee Canal in Upper Clapton early on Sunday morning.

Emergency Services Rush to Scene

Police, paramedics, and firefighters were called to the canal near Riverside Close at around 6:29am on February 23. Officers from the Metropolitan Police, alongside the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade, quickly responded to reports of a man in the water.

The young man was pulled from the canal and treated on-site before being rushed to hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigation Launched, Police Appeal for Witnesses

The death is being treated as unexpected. Police have begun an investigation into how the man ended up in the water, but have released no further details yet.

A Met Police spokesperson said:

“Police were called to reports of a man in the River Lee Canal close to Riverside Close, Upper Clapton, at 06:29hrs on Sunday, 23 February. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade. A man in his 20s was pulled from the water and treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital. Sadly, he later died. His next of kin is being supported by officers.”

The canal towpath was partially cordoned off during the morning for police inquiries but has since reopened to the public.
