OAP Loses Finger After Car Rolls on Isle of Wight
An 80-something pensioner was rushed to hospital after a terrifying crash in Freshwater left him with part of a finger severed.
Car Crashes and Flips on Afton Road
The crash happened just after 12:45pm on Monday, when the man’s car smashed into a parked vehicle on Afton Road before rolling onto its roof.
The pensioner had just been at the local Co-operative supermarket nearby. Witnesses at Bespoke Furniture described the collision as sounding “like a bomb going off.”
Brave Bystanders Help Rescue
Workers rushed outside, initially thinking a tyre had exploded at the garage next door. They were horrified to find the car flipped upside down with the man trapped inside.
“We ran down to the car with others to help him get out,” said one witness. “He kept saying his finger was hurting as the paramedics treated him.”
Emergency services arrived swiftly. Police, ambulance, and paramedics worked together to stabilise the pensioner, strapping him to a spinal board before whisking him away to hospital.
Wife at Scene as Police Clear Up
The man’s wife was at the scene, shaken but relieved he was expected to be okay. She said she was heading to hospital with him.
Police contractors from Stag Lane used a Hiab crane to right the overturned car and cleared the road. Afton Road fully reopened shortly after 2:20pm, ending the chaos on a busy Monday afternoon.
