Pensioner Loses Finger in Shocking Car Crash in Freshwater
An elderly man in his 80s was rushed to hospital this afternoon after his car smashed into a parked vehicle on Afton Road, Freshwater, before rolling onto its roof.
‘Like a Bomb Going Off’ – Witnesses Describe Scene
The crash happened just after 12.45pm, near the local co-operative supermarket. Staff at nearby Bespoke Furniture said the collision sounded “like a bomb going off”.
One witness said, “At first, we thought it was a tyre blowout at the garage nearby, but when we looked, we saw the man upside down in his car on its roof.”
Good Samaritans and Fast Emergency Response
People rushed to help the trapped pensioner as he struggled to free himself. “The police arrived quickly, followed by ambulance and paramedics,” a bystander recalled.
The man kept complaining about severe pain in his finger. Paramedics strapped him to a spinal board before rushing him to hospital. It’s understood he lost part of his finger in the crash.
The man’s wife came to the scene, visibly shaken but relieved. “She was pleased he was going to be okay and said she would accompany him to the hospital,” said a witness.
Road Reopened After Vehicle Is Righted
Police contractors from Stag Lane used a Hiab crane to flip the car back onto its wheels and clear the road. The surface was cleaned and the road reopened in both directions shortly after 2.20pm.
