Monkey Mayhem at Marwell Zoo as Two Macaques Make a Break for It!
Chaos erupted at Marwell Zoo in Hampshire today when two Macaques fled their enclosure, sparking a lockdown that left 1,300 visitors stuck indoors. The cheeky primates staged their escape near Winchester, causing a major scramble among staff to track them down.
Zoo Goes Into Lockdown
Visitors were ordered to stay inside toilets, a gift shop, and other indoor areas while keepers searched the 140-acre site. The zoo is home to a host of exotic animals, including giraffes, tigers, and mischievous penguins. Thankfully, the escape only lasted around ten minutes.
False Alarm Sparks Further Freakout
Just as staff recaptured the fugitives near their enclosure, a member of the public reported spotting another Macaque near the flamingo park. It turned out to be a false alarm, but added to the tension on site.
Serious Health Risks Hidden Behind Cute Faces
Despite their playful nature, Macaques pose a real threat. Nearly all carry the herpes B virus, harmless to them but potentially fatal to humans if infected — though cases are rare. They also harbour the simian foamy virus, which scientists believe could lead to virus jumps from monkeys to people.
Investigation Underway Into Prison Break
A Marwell Zoo spokesperson said the two adult Macaques escaped just after 12.30pm but were caught within 30 metres of their electrified enclosure. “Staff very efficient,” the spokesperson added. The zoo is now investigating how the primates managed their daring getaway despite electric fencing.
