Huge Fire at West London Electricity Substation Sparks Chaos

Major Blaze Hits Hayes Substation

A massive fire broke out at an electrical substation in Hayes, West London, early Friday morning, causing widespread power cuts and forcing Heathrow Airport to temporarily shut down.

The blaze erupted shortly after midnight at the North Hyde substation when a transformer caught fire, triggering a major incident response.

Met Police Launch Counter-Terror Probe – No Foul Play Found

Commander Simon Messinger, leading the police response, confirmed that the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is in charge of the investigation—not because of any suspicion of foul play, but due to the site’s critical national infrastructure status.

“We continue to work with various partners in response to the serious fire at an electricity substation in Hayes in the early hours of this morning (Friday, 21 March),” Commander Messinger said.

Officers have been deployed locally to support residents and businesses, providing advice and ensuring community safety.

Emergency Services Pull Out All Stops

Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade, alongside National Grid and SSEN, remain on the scene, conducting detailed investigations. Local authorities evacuated residents during the early hours for their safety, but they are now being allowed to return home.

“Our officers remain on-hand alongside Hillingdon Council to assist with this process,” said Commander Messinger.

Police have also worked with National Highways England to manage traffic disruptions around the affected area.

Local Communities Supported Amid Ongoing Inquiry

Officers continue to patrol Hillingdon, Hounslow, and Ealing, offering reassurance and help to concerned residents.

“Anyone with concerns over their safety should talk to a local officer,” the commander urged. “We thank the public for their patience while firefighting and investigations continue.”
