Migrant Chaos Hits Dover: Border Force Hauls in Dozens More on Day Ten
Channel Crossings Surge for Tenth Straight Day
Illegal crossings in the English Channel aren’t slowing down. For the tenth day running, the Border Force has pulled ashore dozens of migrants, swelling the total numbers arriving on UK soil.
Today, a mainly male group wearing bright orange life jackets was seen arriving at the Port of Dover, escorted straight into the immigration processing centre after disembarking from Border Force vessels.
Thousands Risk Perilous Journey This Year Alone
The latest influx follows Sunday’s interception of 77 migrants aboard two boats near Dover. Official figures reveal that so far in 2024, a staggering 9,455 migrants have braved the dangerous Channel crossing aboard 193 vessels.
May alone has seen an alarming 1,888 arrivals in just the first 12 days—showing no signs of easing up.
Home Office Halts Key Statistics Amid Controversy
The surge arrives hot on the heels of the Home Office controversially halting publication of stats on prevented crossings. Citing talks with French officials, the government said the figures were “prone to measurement error” but gave no clear reasons for the sudden blackout.
Between May 4 and 12, 1,177 migrants were intercepted, raising the provisional total to 8,278 for the year so far—a 34% jump on last year and 19% up on 2022.
Government Vows Action Amid Legal and Policy Battles
Border Force vessels like Hurricane and Ranger continue frantic search and rescue patrols across the Dover-Calais strait.
A Home Office spokesperson vowed to keep fighting illegal crossings, stressing close cooperation with French authorities to stop crossings and protect lives.
But with ongoing legal challenges looming over policies such as the controversial Rwanda immigration scheme, questions remain about government ability to control the Channel chaos.
The relentless wave of migrants underscores a complex immigration crisis needing urgent, joined-up solutions.
